All That Is Solid Melts Into Air

I turn to Marx as a poet, rather than an economist, to give me any hope for the past. The turbulences of the epochal capitalist accumulations of the 18th and 19th centuries help me to gather an internationalist understanding of where we find ourselves in the 21st century. I feel we suspected the Modern as a slick mediator of capitalist expansion far too late. Understanding Modernism's relation to architecture; the intervolved histories of the slave trade, the enclosures, and the industrial revolution compel me. Grassroots religious, class and folk histories; and the proliferation of informal economies ground me. I scour back through time to unearth quasi-utopic pasts and depend on proxy histories from pre-grain societies, esoteric rituals, alchemical processes, collective bargaining and revolutionary narratives to garner scraps of salvation. I see no futures only the past. Haiti is my sole speculative.

Leah Gordon (born Ellesmere Port, UK) is an artist, curator, and writer. Her work explores the intersectional histories of the Caribbean plantation system, the Enclosure Acts, and the creation of the British working-class. Gordon’s work amplifies ‘histories from below’ and recognises the role of carnival, folk traditions, grassroots religion in both performing and sustaining radical histories. Gordon’s film and photographic work has been exhibited internationally including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; the Dak’art Biennale and the National Portrait Gallery, UK. She is the co-director of the Ghetto Biennale in Port-au-Prince, Haiti; was co-curator of ‘Kafou: Haiti, History &#38;amp; Art’ at Nottingham Contemporary, UK; and 'PÒTOPRENS: The Urban Artists of Port-au-Prince' at Pioneer Works, NYC. Her book KANAVAL was published in 2021 and in 2022, her award-winning feature documentary Kanaval: A People’s History of Haiti, was screened in cinemas and on BBC 4’s Arena. In 2022, Gordon exhibited in and curated at documenta fifteen, Kassel; her work showed at MOCA North Miami and Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, Germany. In 2023 Gordon’s works were acquired by the Kadist Collection and the Royal Museums Greenwich, and in 2024 she had works in group shows at Museum Van Loon in Amsterdam, UMOCA, Salt Lake City and Musée du quai Branly, Paris. The enclosure acts describe the legal process through which common rights over land were terminated and the common land converted to the exclusive property and use of a landowner. This project starts from a belief that a deeper understanding of the enclosure acts is vital to having a critical understanding of the systems and politics that we inhabit now.PART I &#124; THE COMMONERS commissioned by GRAIN &#38;amp; Meadow ArtsPART II &#124; RURAL REBELS partially commissioned by Meadow ArtsPART III &#124; URBAN VAGABONDS&#38;nbsp;partially commissioned by Meadow Arts

We found people that still had common rights over land and photographed them in the common lands where they held rights and interviewed them to hear more about their personal stories, commoners’ status and to discover any historic stories they knew about the land. The stories behind the remaining commons and commoners that held the varied rights presented as an excellent mechanism for understanding the historic legacy of the Enclosure Acts.

The photographs were taken on an analogue medium format camera with black and white film and the subsequent prints are hand-tinted using traditional photographic dyes. We used this process to enliven the landscapes, through colour, with a form of magical realism and invoke both the uncanny nature of the land. This serves to highlight a more spiritual and mystical, and less mercantile connection to the land. It is the breaking of this relationship which Italian feminist historian, Silvia Federici, argues was central to the capitalist expansion of which the Enclosure Act was a dominant apparatus.

PART II &#124; RURAL REBELS looks at the history of protest against enclosure and other loss of rights. Such protests were usually small, local, and harshly punished by the courts, and they have largely been forgotten now.
These photomontages depict artefacts of peasant life, shown alongside representations of rural traditions, and objects relating to the brutal enforcement of land ownership...man traps, barbed wire and measures. They question the nature of land ownership and people’s access to the land, with reference to contemporary activists fighting for the right to roam or to have allotments. The montages are exhibited with Gordon’s large-scale photographic portraits of UK folk traditions to show how these, often ancient, rituals have performed the boundaries, histories, and customs that mark our relationship to the land.

In PART III &#124; URBAN VAGABONDS

acknowledges the social outcomes of the
enclosures, which as well as creating a new class of industrial factory workers,
also created a disenfranchised vagabond class divorced from the land and any
means of subsistence.

This section also considers ‘vagabondage’ as a radical
mechanism for stepping outside of capitalist societal expectations and
symbolised by the photographs, shot on large format analogue colour slide film,
of isolated ruins of caravans in rural settings to portray life outside of the
narrow offerings of late Capitalist Britain. This is exemplified by the stage
set for the character of Rooster Byron in the renowned play Jerusalem, who is a
theatrical 20th century vagabond hero. This play is one of the most
performed plays by amateur dramatic societies in the UK. Portraits of amateur
actors that have portrayed Rooster in local productions of Jerusalem in their
onstage costumes and included as symbols of resistance, dissent, and radical
withdrawal.

Images from Leah Gordon’s extensive archive of analogue
photographic portraits taken in the 1990s of new age travellers and anti-road
protesters draw parallels between the outcomes to the Enclosure Acts, modes of
collective resistance to Thatcher’s Britain in the techno-trance rave culture
which led to the repressive 1994 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act, and
contemporary actions and organisations to protect wildlife habitat from
development, remaining common rights and public access to the land.

In PART IV &#124; ALLOTMENTS

portraits of allotmenteers in Coventry represent positive strategies to reunite people of all races back to the
commons. Coventry still has many allotments, and these portraits
of current allotment holders attempt to show how these small green spaces represent the urban classes’ attempt to reverse enclosure and restore small
plots of land to the landless.

<description>Vernacular Universalism* &#124; Freemasonry in Haiti* The title is from a conversation about Haitian Freemasonry between Sibylle Fischer and Katherine Smith and I thank them for their generosity in granting me permission to temporarily adopt it.

“In Haiti, during the colonial era, the Freemasons were one of the few European institutions that allowed black membership. Freemasonry still thrives in contemporary Haiti, and its visual world pervades the Haitian imaginary. Symbols recur throughout these photographs that once tethered a web of ideas that stretched across the Atlantic, encrypting the most precious values of the Enlightenment.
After many years of research and with unprecedented access, Leah Gordon’s photography offer a rare glimpse of Haiti’s urban middle class; exemplars of respectability in a world invisible to most foreign observers. Surveying these photographs reveals unexpected couplings: mysticism and civil society; secrecy and spectacle; solemnity and celebration; patriarchy and grace.” Katherine Smith
Freemasonry in the Haitian Imaginary (Pre-order link) by Leah Gordon &#38;amp; Kathy Smith is published in two limited editions by Theion Press in late January 2026

This exhibition aims to visualize the mesh of magic and reason; alchemy and science; trade and metaphysical exchange that has stretched from the 17th into the 21st century. By focusing on Haiti, this exhibition sheds light on the relationship between colonized peoples and the Enlightenment. It suggests that for some, Freemasonry offered a path to becoming an agent of modernity, rather than its reviled ‘other’. This exhibition is a timely and significant contribution to an understanding of Freemasonry through the lens of the Black Atlantic.

This exhibition is compiled by Leah Gordon and transgresses the borders between fiction and non-fiction; reality and imagination and alongside images and photomontages by Gordon, will feature original and commissioned works by Haitian, American and European artists including Yves Delva, The Venerable Ernest Dominique, Marg Duston, Andre Eugene, L, Michel Lafleur &#38;amp; Molej Zamour.

CASTE PORTRAITS
The Caste Portraits investigate the practice of the grading from black to white of skin colour, which marked the extent of racial mixing in 18th century colonial Haiti. Moreau de St Mery, a French colonialist living in Haiti, created a surreal taxonomy of race which classified skin colour from black to white using names borrowed from mythology, natural history and bestial miscegenation.
Each name corresponds with a percentage of the fusion of black and white blood. As Colin Dayan, a Haitian historian, comments, ‘Stranger than any supernatural fiction, the radical irrationality of Moreau St Mery’s methods demonstrates to what lengths the imagination can go if driven by racial prejudice.’
Leah Gordon made the Caste Portraits depicting the nine skin varieties, with her partner, Andre Eugene, a Haitian sculptor, at the beginning of the racial spectrum as ‘Noir’ and with herself as ‘Blanche’, at the end. Gordon was questioning her own relationship and culpability with Haiti’s history by placing herself in the series.

CASTE &#124; CAST
In this project the Caste portraits are revisited to speculate on parallel histories linking Northern England and Haiti.

The portraits are exhibited alongside a film of a river journey from Manchester, along the Manchester Ship Canal, past Ellesmere Port and finishing in Liverpool. Ellesmere Port, the town where Leah Gordon was born, is equidistant between Liverpool, a city built upon the slave trade and Manchester, built upon the industrial revolution. Quotes from historians and scholars appear on screen, which highlight shared economic and political histories. Two short 16mm films, one of machinery fabricated near Liverpool and now lying ruined and overgrown sinking into the earth in Haiti and one of the storage rooms in the National archives where the only known printed copy of Haiti's Declaration of Independence dated January 1st 1804, was discovered, show Haiti’s history hidden and embedded in Britain’s colonial archives whilst Britain’s industrial past lies rusting and overgrown in Haiti’s tropical landscape.
These historical reflections sit alongside a prophetic photographic reconstruction of William Blake’s illustration of ‘Europe Supported by Africa and the Americas’ used by the British abolitionists. The reconstruction functions as a stark look at a future where the old economic power balances are shifting and changing.

This work was commissioned for 'The Kingdom of This World, Reimagined' which celebrates the 70th anniversary of Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier’s historical novel, The Kingdom of This World (1949).&#38;nbsp;The
work is a triptych with a prophetic photographic reconstruction of William Blake’s illustration of ‘Europe Supported by Africa and the Americas’, from a book used by the British abolitionists, at its centre. This is flanked by two constructed portraits based upon a John Thomas Smith illustration from his 1817 book, 'Vagabondiana', which depicts an injured black British sailor begging in Whitechapel’s streets with a ship on his head to denote his former employment. John Thomas Smith, a colleague and friend of William Blake, depicts a swathe of British people who chose the life of the vagabond or beggar rather than the misery of working in the Northern factories. This triptych portrays the intervolved histories between the disenfranchised British working class, the ironic complications of the abolition movement and the complexity of the Haitian Revolution.

In 1961 Haitian dictator, François Duvalier (aka Papa Doc), renamed a small village Cabaret to Duvalierville, and began a construction project to create a Modernist utopian town to parallel Brasilia.

After many failed attempts to capture Barbot, a myth transpired that he was a shape-shifter who could transform into a black dog. Duvalier subsequently ordered that all black dogs in Haiti be killed.

From 1961 to 1963, as an attempt to destabilise the regime, the CIA bought the rights to rewrite the predictions for Aries (Papa Doc’s star sign) for the French monthly magazine, Horoscope. Their intelligence informed them that Papa Doc was highly superstitious, subscribed to, and avidly believed, the magazine.

Today Duvalierville remains an anomaly and its architectural achievements unacknowledged. In a country still deeply divided between former supporters and victims of Duvalier’s regime, this odd cluster of civic places is in part memorial, utopic dream, ruin and uncomfortable history.

The project will intertwine the histories of progressive architectural tendencies with the complex legends and legacies of dictatorship to interrogate the polarities between Modernism and Mysticism and reveal some inherent contradictions of their supposedly antipathetic relationship.

The project depicts a town haunted by a black dog and failed Modernism, using photography, film, faux De Chiricos, charcoal drawings of tropical Modernism in Lincolnshire, distressed polaroids, Haitian art, reflections on Godard’s Alphaville and archive.
